Grainger’s practice is a study of time with the objects or spaces she gathers and inhabits.  Her treatment of the materials she employs reveals a sensitivity to the fabric of architecture itself. Her conceptual interest focuses on the haptic memory that is embedded in the structures she encounters, letting her develop a personal relationship with them. The assemblages travel from the studio, vulnerable to the spontaneity of becoming or collapsing in new environments, activating her research and subject matter in the process. Engaging in multimedia processes that simulate found surfaces or oscillate the details, her response to the opposing textures and forms is naturally intuitive, demanding equal attention to the conflicting as well as the harmonious.

The designation of Grainger’s work is a revisit to the site-specific; her ouevre operating as an interactive site in itself. It thrives in its flexibility to transfer and transform into different spaces, representing her special awareness of the frameworks that the work is established in. She is interested in the partiality of her constructions subtly interrupting the common narrative of complete and finished that’s associated with finalised exhibitions. The audience are invited to question the contradictions between the unresolved elements and occupy the remaining gaps, sharing in a provisional permanence, to discover uncertainty and witness presence. The work is installed but also infiltrates the space, remapping and navigating the audience’s role as static viewer to active participant, aligning with the meditative arrangements of the objects themselves.

A material, an action, a space or a thought, Grainger’s practice is a monument to the silent communication of objects, examining their social life that is typically reduced to mere functionality. Whether it be immediate or prolonged, her practice reflects the very intimate consumption of time, seeking to meticulously extract and memorialise the invisible tethers and temporary intentions that surrounds us.
